Hotel within walking distance to sights

My husband is going to be in Pittsburgh on business in September and we figured we%26#39;d make a weekend of it. I%26#39;ll be with my infant son without a car on Monday while he works. Where should we stay so that I could walk to museums, cute neighborhoods, etc? Where is ';downtown'; or should we stay closer to the colleges? We can%26#39;t break the bank (prefer less than $200) since work is paying for the hotel.

Thanks!

If you stay downtown you can walk over to the North Side aviary, children%26#39;s museum, Andy Warhol, Mattress Factory, Science Center. You could also walk out Penn Avenue from town to the Strip District and check out the food stores, etc. Hotels downtown range from pretty fancy (William Penn, Renaissance) to cheaper but decent (Courtyard Marriott, Hampton Suites).

If you stay in Oakland (Pitt and other campus areas) you can walk to Carnegie Art and Natural History museums, Phipps Conservatory, Nationality Rooms at Pitt. There are smaller and funkier restaurants in Oakland than downtown, but you can get a range of decent food anywhere. Holiday Inn Select on Lytton Street gets the best reviews of the Oakland hotels.

Oakland is a college and hospital neighborhood so there is a lot of bustle there.

No other neighborhoods have such a concentration of museums and other attractions within walking distance.

Hope you enjoy your visit! Our weather is usually very nice in September.

Glad you%26#39;ll be visiting! There%26#39;s really no one neighborhood with easy access to all the sites. Oakland (university area) will give you access to the Carnegie Museums with the dinosaurs, the Nationality Rooms at Pitt and Phipps Conservatory. Downtown is a business-oriented area; it%26#39;s great if you want to go to a ballgame or the theater. There%26#39;s not much else in the immediate vicinity of downtown but it%26#39;s an easy trip to the Strip, which is a market area that%26#39;s fun to visit in the daytime, and easy access to Station Square (you really should go up the incline while you%26#39;re here.) as well as the North Side, which has the Andy Warhol Museum, the Children%26#39;s Museum and the Aviary. Shadyside, Squirrel Hill and to some extent the South Side are the nicest shopping/eating neighborhoods. Good luck!

Thanks for your help! I love this site - it%26#39;s great to hear real opinions. I%26#39;m looking at South Side and possibly trying to get a Priceline deal for the Renaissance as others have suggested. Thanks!!!!!!!

In addition to trying to get the Renaissance via priceline, you can also try hotwire for some other downtown hotels such as the Omni William Penn or the Westin. I%26#39;ve done hotwire several times and have gotten the Westin every time, usually for under $150 and sometimes even cheaper than that. It%26#39;s the convention center hotel and is very nice.

Do you have any idea where your husband has to be on business? It%26#39;d help us out alot in finding you things to do.
